Foliage: alternating oval leaves grow directly on the branch. Each has 10 to 15 parallel veins either side of the central vein. They are ribbed on the underside of the leaf.

Flowers: greenish flowers grow from the leaf axil, blooming from May to June.
Fruit: the fruit becomes black when ripe and contains a stone.
Size: up to 4 m.

Habitat: heath, sparse woodland, cracks among rocks and avalanche tracks: the flexible branches of Alpine buckthorn bend under the weight of snow and spring back up when the snow thaws.
In the Pyrenees: throughout the range, from hill level (below 800 m) up to subalpine level (1,900 m).
Typical companions: borderea pyrenaica, Pyrenean meadow rue, cyclamen-leaved crowfoot, silvery vetch, Pyrenean speedwell, Pyrenean pheasant's eye, Pyrenean spurge, French sorrel...
