  HOOKED PINE 
(endemic to the Pyrenees) 
  Pinus uncinata   

     
 
Bark:
dark greyish brown, thin but tough.

Foliage:
evergreen. The thick, hard, dark green needles grow in pairs.

Fruit:
the pine cones give the hooked pine its name. The top part of each scale is hook-shaped.

  Size:
up to 25 m.

Lifetime:
several centuries. Some hooked pines alive today are nearly 1,000 years old.

Use:
when grown in favourable conditions, the hooked pine provides good timber.

Habitat:
found on steep slopes, cliffs or scree at high altitudes (up to 2,750 m).

In the Pyrenees:
the hooked pine is found throughout the range, often on cliffs. There are many at the Pic d'Anie in the Néouvielle reserve, around Mont Louis and in the Aygues Tortes national park in Catalunya.

Typical companions:
silver birch, sorbus chamaemespilus, leopard's bane, gentiana burseri, bilberry...
