  BEARBERRY 
  Arctostaphylos uva-ursi   

     
 
Foliage:
tough, shiny leaves that remain at least two years.

Flowers:
the pinkish white flowers hang in clusters and bloom from April to June.

Fruit:
the small red fruit are edible but bitter.

  Size:
this small shrub with creeping branches reaches about 20 cm.

Habitat:
stony heathland on south-facing slopes or under hooked pine or Scots pine.

  In the Pyrenees:
throughout the range up to 2,300 m. Frequent at the foot of the Canigou and on the Puigmal massif.

Typical companions:
dwarf juniper, wild cotoneaster, heather, northern bilberry, festuca eskia, anemone alpina sulphurea, amplexicaule buttercup.
