Habitat: rhododendrons only grow on the upper slopes where forests give way to heath. This shrub prefers shady slopes, where lasting snow protects its young shoots from late frost.
In the Pyrenees: throughout the range, sometimes up to nearly 3,000 m.
Typical companions: purple coltsfoot, saxifraga geranioides, Alpine rose, senecio pyrenaicus, sweet william, Alpine St John's wort...
