PYRENEAN WILLOW (endemic to the Pyrenees)

Foliage: the upperside of the green leaves is only slightly hairy, whereas the underside is blue-green and covered in silky hairs.

Size: the tortuous branches of the Pyrenean willow spread out, rarely rising more than 50 cm above the ground.

Habitat: low-lying heathland of shaded slopes with lasting snow, or in scree on chalky soil.
In the Pyrenees: found throughout the range at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,400 m.
Typical companions: mountain avens, narcissus anemone, Alpine bartsia, Pyrenean columbine, ranunculus thora, Alpine bearberry...
