  MONT-LOUIS

Mont-Louis is the highest fortified town in France. This military centre was built by Vauban in the XVIIth century to ward off Spanish armies. Mont-Louis still has a military vocation, for it is the headquarters of French commandos.

The village's sunny position earned it the first experimental solar furnace in France. Built in 1952 along the fort's ramparts, the furnace focuses the sun's energy, producing temperatures of up to 6,000 °C!

  Capcir

Capcir is a high plateau (1,400 metres) at the foot of the Carlit range. It benefits from large amounts of both sunshine and snow. In the winter it is a paradise for cross-country skiers, in summer a walker's paradise. The villages of Puyvalador, Formiguères and Les Angles have developed resorts offering a well-preserved natural landscape for nature lovers throughout the year.

The Aude springs from this vast high-altitude plateau.

The village of Matemale is not a resort but an important sports training centre for top-class athletes. The general public can take a breath of fresh air at the leisure centre beside Matemale lake, a huge artificial lake covering 200 hectares into which the Aude flows.
